Types of Insomnia

  1. Acute Insomnia
    • Short-term sleep disturbances lasting a few days to weeks
    • Often triggered by stress, major life events, or illness
    • Usually resolves once underlying causes are addressed
  2. Chronic Insomnia
    • Occurs at least three nights per week for over three months
    • Can involve trouble staying asleep, waking too early, or non-restorative sleep
    • Symptoms may include daytime fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, and reduced functioning

Signs You May Have Sleep Problems

You might experience sleep problems if you regularly:

  • Take a long time to fall asleep or wake frequently during the night
  • Feel unrefreshed after sleep
  • Have difficulty concentrating, feel tired, or experience mood changes during the day

Persistent sleep difficulties can affect mental and physical health, making early intervention important.

Evidence-Based Treatment for Insomnia

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for sleep disorders. CBT-i helps clients to:

  • Identify thoughts and behaviours that interfere with sleep
  • Replace unhelpful habits with sleep-promoting routines
  • Track progress through sleep diaries

CBT-i has been shown to improve sleep quality, reduce insomnia symptoms, and support overall wellbeing.

Adelaide Psychology Clinic & Online Therapy

Our Adelaide psychologists are CBT-i practitioners accredited through the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the Australian Sleep Association (ASA). Services include:

  • Face-to-face insomnia therapy in Adelaide
  • Online therapy and telehealth counselling across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, and regional areas

Telehealth sessions provide flexible, confidential, and professional sleep counselling, delivering the same evidence-based care as in-person appointments.
